We're starting to get nervous around here. Here's the thing:
~Lots of work, and winter's coming. Probably soon.
We need to finish our fence around our home quarter. We've started; all the corners are in; now, we have to dedicate a couple long days to putting up the perimeter. Once we get started, it won't take long. I know, it seems like I've been saying this for months - the fact that we really NEED to get the fencing done - but other things just seem to have taken priority. It will get done, though, because Matt wants to make sure it'll get done.
We poured the cement for our addition on Wednesday. So, that means we HOPEFULLY will get the walls up and insulated before winter...at least up and the roof on. Matt and I can do the insulating later.
We finished combining on Thursday, thanks to Matt's dad. He came after work from Roseau for two days to combine. It was so nice of him! Today, Matt's raking and baling the cornstalks. The cows like to munch on those during the winter. Clarence was helping him for a while, but he only lasted long enough to take his nap (in the tractor). So, I had to go pick him up - he was hungry........Now, he wants to watch Little House and play with his toys. I guess that's ok, as long as he's quiet while the princess sleeps. I really cherish the time to myself when both kids nap at once. It's a wonderful quiet time to get some things done without them following me and messing everything up again.
Hunting starts tomorrow. My dad really wants me to hunt; me, myself, on the otherhand, I don't really care if I do. I'm going to go out tomorrow morning and try to shoot something - mostly to make dad happy. :) I'll enjoy it once I get out there, and I have a great place to sit, but I like to sleep, and during deer hunting, I never seem to get enough sleep. Oh well, I will manage, and I hope we have a fun and safe time.
I've baked a little today. My mom's church is having a bake sale tomorrow, and since she's been working all week, she asked my sister and I to bake a little for her. Nikki's making buns and macaroon kiss cookies. I made gingersnaps this morning, and I think I'm just going to make a big batch of chocolate chip. We can take the extras to the cabin for the weekend. :)
Yesterday, we got our last pasture of cows run home during lunch. They just followed me in the suburban pulling the gravity wagon full of corn. In the afternoon, Matt fenced, and the kids and I went out to help after they'd finished their naps. We got a little bit of grass fenced in so we could put the cows out there; that way we don't have to feed them hay for a while. They seem content now; lots of grass and nice comfy places to lay down. Hopefully they stay that way and don't decide to make a way to get out and into the bales or run to the neighbors' fields.
Clarence has been playing non-stop with his farm animals and tractors/equipment. He randomly calls out, "Mom, the cows get out!", to which I go and look, and he's opened one of his gates and has a bull or cow running away (or all 15 animals). Then, he has to get his pickup (with a working horn) to chase them back in. He also has a cowboy with a horse that he uses to chase them in sometimes. He calls out, "Mom, I haul cow poop." with his tractor and scraper....I guess to him the scraper looks like a manure spreader. It's cute. He just told me he can use his manure spreader to haul corn, then use a "shubbel" to scoop the corn out and feed to the cows. He uses his wooden blocks as salt blocks and gives the cows about 5 at a time (He calls them mineral). He hauls bales over and over and over, and the cows are always getting out in his bales. Matt seems to think Clarence's cows always are getting out and that Clarence is sort of making fun of him and our never-ending situation. I suppose in a way he is, without knowing it. It's all he knows....that the cows get out, but they're supposed to be in the fence.
Adina has been busy, busy, busy. She's really into doing her hair lately....I bought her some headbands and barrettes, but she truly doesn't like them yet....she just pulls them out right away, even if I make a big deal and tell her how pretty she is. She just smiles and pulls them out. Cousin Ruthie painted her fingernails the other day, but Adina only sat still through one hand. She'd keep trying to look at her fingers while Ruthie was painting them, thus wiping all the polish off. She's such a little collector; one minute I look at her and she's carrying five different pens and pencils; the next minute, she's got wax squares (like the kind you hide and take out to melt instead of lighting a candle....I hide mine, but she knows where, so she's always digging in there); the next minute, she's taken Clarence's calves and taken off, then he chases her, and tries to take them away...that usually ends with someone crying. Clarence doesn't share his animals well; we're working on it, but I guess since it's only Adina here with him, it's hard to always make him share his animals with her. After that, she'll run around and find her baby, or Clarence's sheep. She knows she's not supposed to have his sheep, either, so as soon as someone notices she's holding it, she takes off....... Adina's a blast right now. She only gets crabby when she's tired or hungry, and she's doing a lot of funny things right now.
The past couple weeks, we've had my homeschooled cousins out to help us in the afternoons after they've finished their school. Rudy and Frank help Matt fence, and Ruthie hangs out in the house with the kids and the phone so I can go out and help too. She can take them out to play after naps and give them a snack and just play with them. The kids love it, and so do I. I love getting to spend time with the cousins, and I like being able to have my kids at home. Rudy's a huge help out fencing. He digs right in and does anything Matt asks. Frank's still pretty young to be tons of help, but he likes to visit with us and drive the 4-wheeler around. \
Well, I'd better go start my next batch of cookies before Adina wakes up and decides to help. Have a fabulous day! And be safe if you're hunting!
